VISITING NICE

From the name itself alone, you can already tell that the French city Nice is just that – a very nice place to visit for one of your holidays. In fact, it is more than nice; it is amazing. It is also one of the most populous cities in France, fifth most to be specific, and the capital of the Alpes Maritimes department. Also known as “Nice la Belle,” or “Nice the Beautiful” in English, the city boasts of a rich history, a vibrant culture, and a mixture of the old and the new.

If you are headed to this beautiful French city, it is highly recommended that you start your tour at any of the following places:

The Old Town

For a real taste of Nice, make sure that you head to The Old Town. It has deeply embedded roots in the French history, as it is where the Niçoisresided and earned a living. To its east you will find the Castle Hill, which offers views of the intertwined cobbled streets. This is also where you will find the Chapelle de la Miséricorde, which is no doubt one of the world’s prettiest Baroque churches. Another great  sight to marvel at while you are here is the PalaisLascaris, an extravagant baroque styled architectural wonder built by the 17th century aristocrat named Lascaris.

Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicolas

Next on your list of places to visit is the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicolas. The consecration of the cathedral was conducted in December of 1912, in memory of the 1864 Russian Tsar’s son, prince Nicholas Alexandrovich. The prince died in the city in the year 1865, when he was only 25 years old. The cathedral is a must-visit for you if you are looking forward to seeing one of the city’s most extravagant architectural sites.

The Promenade des Anglais

One of the most popular sites in Nice, the Promenade des Anglaisruns from the city’s airport all the way to The Old Town. To its east is the quai des Etats-Unis. Here, you will find yourself amazed at the sight of the sparkling and majestically blue waters of the Bay of Angels, or the “baie des Anges” to the French people. Along the side of the ocean is a long walkway perfect for a stroll while breathing in the refreshing scent of the sea. On the other side you will find some of the best restaurants, cafes, and hotels in the city. Negresco, which is the most famous hotel here, is worth a stop so that you can marvel at the Gustave Eiffel’s glass roof.

The CourSaleya Market

A visit to the CourSaleyaMarket is another thing to add to your itinerary if you are into outdoor activities that involve shopping for some of the freshest produce you will find in the city. Start your day early by stopping by for some coffee and pastries at one of the cafes, restaurants, or bars that dot the square.

Muséed’ArtModerne et d’ArtContemporain

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMAC)is a perfect example of the new in the city of Nice. It showcases two of the greatest movements when it comes to modern art. Here, you can expect to be greeted by masterpieces that portray avant-garde art among many others.
